BACKGROUND

The University Occupational Safety and Health Committee was established in 2004 to discuss Occupational safety and health management office (OSHMO) issues in UPM, in line with the directive issued by the Chief Secretary to the Government related to compliance with the Occupational Safety and Health Act 1994 (Act 514) and implementation of orders,
regulations, procedures as well as legal provisions related to safety and protection in Government Departments.

In view of the large scope of work, the Occupational Safety and Health Unit was
established on 1 January 2006, under the auspices of the UPM Development
Section, to become the driving force and secretariat to the University’s Occupational Safety and Health Committee.

UPM attained research university status in 2007 and the OSH scope also evolved. The Occupational Safety and Health Unit was subsequently upgraded to become the Occupational Safety and Health Section on 1 September 2007 and moved to the UPM Registrar’s Office. Under the auspices of the Registrar’s Office, the management of safety and health continued to flourish. Other than managing the activities of the Occupational Safety and Health Committee, the Section began getting involved with competency training, implementation of safety and health inspections in all Responsibility Centres (RCs) as well as introducing the policy of providing safety clothing to staff.

Effective 1 August 2009, the Occupational Safety and Health Section was once again upgraded to become a new entity known as  the Occupational Safety and Health Management Office, UPM and was placed under the auspices of the Vice Chancellor’s Office. Thus emphasizing UPM’s increasing commitment towards occupational safety and health.
